New Documentary Plays Takes Center Stage At Montana Pride!
"Out Under the Big Blue Sky"
receives phenomenal praise during premiere
Missoula, MT – “Out Under the Big Blue Sky,” a new play by playwright and Montana resident Laramie Dean, will have an encore performance at Montana Pride Weekend on the stage of the Myrna Loy Theatre in Helena, Montana on Friday, June 18. The performance begins at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door the night of the performance or through the Pride Celebration committee at www.qnewsmontana.com. Limited seating is available.
“Out Under the Big Blue Sky” is written in the style of documentary theatre. The play deals with such topical issues as coming out as queer to family and friends, homophobia, gay marriage, and the pursuit of true love. Dean wrote the play after he compiled the interviews of 16 Montana citizens who identify as “queer” (gay, lesbian, or bisexual). “Out Under the Big Blue Sky” tells the stories of the Montanans in their own words.
This play, in its debut performance, had a profound effect on audiences, queer and straight. Queer citizens identified with the stories on stage, while straight audience members felt, in many cases, that their eyes had been opened to issues of which they had never been aware.
The mission of "Out Under the Big Blue Sky" is to tell the real stories of these brave individuals who have dared to be themselves in a "pioneering" state that can be as hostile as it is beautiful. Montanans – especially queer Montanans -- are a marginalized and overlooked sect of the over-arching queer community, and this play seeks to remedy that by highlighting these people to all audiences, gay and straight, Montanans and the rest of the world.
Laramie Dean is a native Montanan who grew up in a small town in northeastern Montana. He has lived in Missoula, Montana for 10 years, and has a Masters in Theatre from The University of Montana-Missoula. His past stage roles have been that of Lumiere in the Missoula Children’s Theatre rendition of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” and as Riff Raff in The University of Montana’s production of “The Rocky Horror Show.” Dean will be attending Southern Illinois University in the fall to earn his PhD in Playwriting. “Out Under the Big Blue Sky” is Dean’s second full-length play to be produced.
